Proposals Sought for Travel Grants to January 2004 Berlin Conference on Transnational Risks

On 2-10 January 2004, the Irmgard Coninx Foundation, the Social Science Research Center in Berlin, and Humboldt University will convene the first of a series of conferences and workshops on transnational phenomena. The first of these events will focus on the theme "Transnational Risks -- The
Responsibility of Social Sciences and the Media." Scholars and journalists selected by organizers to participate will have costs of travel and accommodation for the conference.
From 2-10 January 2004, an international workshop and conference on
transnational risks and global civil society will take place in Berlin. The event belongs to a series of workshops and conferences on transnationality organized by the Irmgard Coninx Foundation, in cooperation with the Social Science Research Center Berlin and Humboldt University.
Klaus Topfer, Executive
Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, will deliver a keynote address on "Transnational Risks and the Role of the UN."
Other speakers at the international conference will include Amitai Etzioni,
Susan George, and Francois Ewald.
This first workshop will focus on the topic "Transnational Risks -- The
Responsibility of Social Sciences and the Media." The workshop will address questions such as:
* How can a global civil society respond to challenges that do
not stop at borders?
* How can society sustain, use, and expand networks of risk management and crisis management for the development of a transnational civil society?
To discuss these questions in a challenging interdisciplinary atmosphere, organizers seek young scholars, journalists, and NGO activists currently working on related topics.
The workshops will be conducted by an
international group of senior researchers.
Topics of the workshops include:
* NGOs -- between Globalization and Localization;
* NGOs -- Agents of Transnational Civil Society;
* Global Financial Risks and Transnational Regime Building;
* Transnational risks -- Focus of the Media and Focus on the Media;
* Public Health as a Transnational challenge; and
* Transnational Risks in Historic Persepective.
Senior reseachers conducting the workshops include:
* Boris Holzer, Research Fellow at the Department of Sociology, University
of Munich;
* Roger de Weck, Journalist and Former Chief Editor of German weekly Die Zeit;
* Folke Schuppert, Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law,
Humboldt University;
* Shalini Randeria, Head of the Department of Sociology and Social
Anthropology, Central European University, Budapest;
* Jan Aart Scholte, Professor in Politics and International Studies,
University of Warwick;
* Cyril I. Obi, Senior Research Fellow, Nigerian Institute of International
Affairs; and
* Vinh-Kim Nguyen, Professor of Medical Anthropology, McGill University, Montreal.
To apply for participation, candidates must submit a CV and a two-to-three page
proposal outlining their research or journalistic project.
Candidates must submit applications no later than 31 August 2003.
Participants will discuss and develop papers during the workshop, with an eye to presenting the results of
the workshops at the subsequent international conferences.
The Irmgard Coninx Foundation will cover costs of travel and accommodation for selected participants.
