CQRM Institute an Opportunity for Training in Qualitative Methods

January 4, 2004, 8:00 am - January 17, 2004, 6:00 pm

Location: Tempe, Arizona

The Consortium on Qualitative Research Methods (CQRM) announces its third annual training institute in qualitative methods for graduate students and junior faculty.

Topics include research design, concept formation, methods of structured and focused comparisons of cases, typological theory, case selection, process tracing, comparative historical analysis, congruence testing, path dependency, interpretivism, counterfactual analysis, interview and field research -- including archival techniques -- necessary and sufficient conditions, fuzzy-set methods, and philosophy-of-science issues relevant to
qualitative research.

The institute seeks to enable students to create and critique methodologically sophisticated qualitative research designs, including case studies, tests of necessity or sufficiency, and narrative and interpretive work. It will explore the techniques, uses, strengths, and limitations of these methods, while emphasizing their relationships with alternative approaches.

Attendees will receive constructive feedback on their own qualitative research designs, and the course will also include "master-class" discussions led by the authors of well-known works which employ qualitative methods. Faculty will illustrate concepts by reference to exemplary research in
international relations, comparative politics, and American politics.

The syllabus from the second annual institute, available at http://www.asu.edu/clas/polisci/cqrm/IQRM2003syllabus.html, indicates the range of the issues the institute will cover: Please keep in mind, however, that faculty will revise this syllabus for the third institute.

CQRM member institutions will use their own meritocratic criteria to select students or junior faculty to attend the institute, and must notify CQRM of their choices by October 17, 2003.

Students, fellows and junior faculty not so selected, or who attend non- member organizations, may apply directly to CQRM. The Consortium must receive these applications no later than October 17, 2003, and will consist of a curriculum vitae; a list of any courses taken in qualitative or other
methodology; a 300-word personal statement indicating why the applicant
wishes to attend the institute; and the name and contact information for a
reference familiar with the applicant's training and research. Applicants will receive word of their attendance decisions no later than 7 November 2003.

CQRM will cover the costs of tuition, lodging, and meals for successful applicants. Attendees will cover their own costs of transportation to and from Arizona State University. Participants will arrive on Sunday, 4 January, and depart Saturday, 17 January 2004. The seminar will meet daily, beginning on Monday, 5 January. The final meeting will take place on Friday, 16 January.
